SEEING really was believing when the Redditch Advertiser went 'behind the scenes' to look at building work in the Kingfisher Centre.

Hidden away from shoppers, scores of workmen were busy transforming the centre as part of its £60 million revamp.

Above Evesham Walk, the upper level of the former Tesco store has been stripped and gutted ready for its transformation into American designer clothes store TK Maxx.

And opposite, on the former Dinaways Restaurant site, work is on schedule to create a massive JJB sports store.

But with scaffolding and rough concrete floors everywhere, it was hard to imagine the two new stores would be open by the end of October.

Elsewhere Ballast Construction was in the process of creating a Debenhams department store in Royal Square, where diggers and excavators are demolishing the existing units.

The former bus station and Kingfisher House have both been completely demolished and the foundations for a new transport interchange have been laid.

The new building will boast a health and fitness club, food hall, with TJ Hughes and Wilkinsons among the stores. The food hall will be the size of the former Tesco's ground floor and will include meat, fresh produce and ethnic food.

Kingfisher Centre director Brian Walker said: "We are so busy making changes behind the scenes, it is absolutely fantastic. I think if people realised how much refurbishment and rebuilding is going on, they would be totally amazed."
