TAKING things as they come and not worrying about anything is the secret of success for sprightly 100-year-old Bromsgrove woman Lizzie Smith.

The Gilbert Court resident, who still does all her own cooking and cleaning, celebrated her centenary this month with a telegram from the Queen.

Born in London, she moved to the area in 1919 to work at Romsley sanatorium, before settling in Rubery in 1936.

She moved to Bromsgrove about 20 years ago.

Mrs Smith, whose son Bryce died two days before her 99th birthday, celebrated her centenary with a family party at Bewell Head Workmen's Club, in Sidemoor.

Among those who attended were her 79-year-old daughter, Mary Thexton, and 68-year-old son.
