Weston-s-Mare 2, Evesham Utd 1

A THIRD defeat in six days left United's faithful followers in furious mood by the seaside last Saturday.

They have come to expect more from their side and their fantastic support hardly deserved the pathetic showing from the visitors.

A bumpy pitch and a fifth game in ten days could be used as an excuse but there's no real reason for lack of effort.

There appeared little response from the management during the interval when Evesham trailed 2-0 as Jody Bevan twice took advantage of some goalkeeping.

The opener on 17 minutes was slightly fortuitous as two United players lay injured on the ground although Jay Powell's injury was partially due to Damien Beattie's needless charge from goal.

Steve Taylor and Richard Clark both came within inches of equalising before Beattie was deceived by Bevan's stoppage time header and could only parry the ball on to a post and the Somerset striker tapped in the rebound.

Mark Wolsey and James Brown replaced Pratt and Taylor as a more animated Phil Mullen opted for a 4/3/3 formation on the hour. Wolsey, Steve McCartan and Andy Smith all shot wide while Joe Licata's 69th minute effort was blocked by Steve Weaver and Brown's follow-up was a tame strike.

Andy Hodgetts glanced Stuart Payne's cross wide before the former took advantage of hesitancy at the back to hit back three minutes from time.

Panic set in the Weston defence and Matt Pendleton could have bagged an equaliser two minutes into injury time but the full back volleyed over the angle with only Weaver to beat.
