IN the present foot-and-mouth crisis there seems to be plenty of sympathy for the human beings, but precious little for the animals involved.
I do have feelings for the farmers but, apart from the rare breeds, these animals are bred for slaughter. That's the reality, whether it's in the fields or in the abattoir.
What is happening now is that, instead of being tucked neatly away, it is happening before our eyes and we feel sorry for ourselves. But what about some sympathy for the innocent animals?
