SPEEDING drivers are making a Pershore road into a "racetrack", raising fears that it could lead to a tragedy outside a nearby school.
Poor parking was making the situation even worse, according to councillor Ken Rowe, a governor of Abbey Park Nursery and First School.
He described parking on Abbey Road was as "higgledy-piggledy" and said cars were going too fast, meaning an accident was waiting to happen.
The speeding fears were raised by Coun Ray Steadman, who said cars were making "a racetrack" of the road, speaking at a meeting of Pershore Town Council last Thursday, April 19.
During the meeting, Worcestershire County Council's highways partnership unit manager, Geoff Cox, informed the town council of the latest traffic schemes and listen to councillors' comments on traffic problems.
Coun Rowe added that cars should park behind Almonry Court residential home.
He also said the council should support a proposal for no parking on both sides Abbey Road.
Mr Cox informed councillors the 'no waiting at any time' signs on Abbey Road were not being obeyed and time limits on parking in High Street and Church Walk had been changed from a one-hour to a two-hour limit.
He also said the Wyre Piddle and Upper Moor bypass would bring about a change in road numbering and the A4538 would now be classified as the A44 and a narrowing of carriageways would give more space to pedestrians.
Coun Grantham said he would like to see weight restrictions on the existing A44 as lorries were using it as a through road to Pershore.
He hoped that, following this meeting, the council would see a few improvements regarding traffic management in and around the town.
l AN exhibition showing Worcestershire County Council's plans for the bypass will be on show to the public at Wyre Piddle Village Hall next Monday (April 30).
