IT was a special day at the sailing club last Sunday with three races over the day with the victor winning the Chelmay Cup.
With a steadily increasing wind from the south east the first race got underway in dry conditions with a short beat downstream to turn just above the weir.
Haywood and Green quickly broke away, but Green wasn't able to keep up the pace and the rest of the fleet having to compete for third place.
At the end of the first competition it was Haywood in front ahead of Green and Edwards.
The second race got under way in a very strong blow but with all the competitors determined to do better.
Edwards took an early lead which wasn't to last as he capsized along with Green which put them both at the back.
Ian and John Robertson had the measure of the conditions and, despite extreme pressure, it was the Robertsons first across the line, with Haywood second and John Pickford third.
The final event of the day was held in fine rain which failed to dampen the good natured rivalry with all to play for.
Again Edwards had an excellent start with the hard chasing Robertsons breathing down his neck.
The lead at this stage was being shared by five competitors with no one making a lengthy impression and it was down to the last 100 metres after an hour's sailing that the winner could be one of four helms.
As they crossed the finish almost line abreast it was Haywood who stole first place, John Pickford second with Green just behind.
After a truly excellent day's entertainment Haywood ended as the overall worthy winner and accepted the trophy.
