FAMILY and friends of a former Royal Grammar School pupil killed in a road smash in Broadway have paid tribute to the "terrific" teenager.
Philip Hatt, captain of Broadway Cricket Club's first team, was driving home from the ground along the Snowshill Road at about 7.30pm last Saturday when his Peugeot 205 ploughed into a parked Renault Clio and crashed into a cottage at Bury End.
The 19-year-old Leeds University student was flung from his car and pronounced dead at the scene.
Janice Longhi said she and her boyfriend Alan Barker felt the impact as Philip's car hit their house, and ran outside to help.
"I covered him with a duvet and we stayed with him until the emergency services arrived," she said.
President of Broadway Cricket Club, barrister Michael de Navarro, described the teenager's death as "a great tragedy".
"Club members are absolutely devastated. He had a great future ahead of him as a law student and was a great cricketer, having captained the Senior XI for Worcester Royal Grammar School," he said.
"He was a terrific young man in every way and will be greatly missed."
Philip's devastated mother, Helen Barlow, said her only child had everything to live for.
"He was full of life and was making plans for his future with his girlfriend Tammy Knight.
"I've never known Philip so happy," she added.
"They were a perfect match and were planning to get a flat together in Leeds, where she was also to study."
Philip, of Cheltenham Road, Evesham, who was also a member of Kidderminster Golf Club, had spent Saturday preparing the cricket ground for the coming season.
Trevor Hatt, Philip's father, who lives in Stourport-on-Severn, was today trying to come to terms with the shock.
Philip's funeral is to take place St Bartholomew's, in Grimley, near Worcester, on Tuesday.
Flowers or donations to the Air Ambulance can be sent through Tomlins funeral directors at 36 The Leys, Evesham WR11 5AP.An inquest on his death was opened and adjourned on Monday.
