RENOWNED human rights lawyer Geoffery Bindman is due to visit Worcester tomorrow to commemorate world-famous historian and campaigner E P Thompson.

Mr Bindman, currently advising beleaguered Europe Minister Keith Vaz, has been invited as the guest speaker for E P Thompson Day.

The event, now in its seventh year since the city historian's death eight years ago, celebrates his life and work.

Mr Bindman has been invited to speak at County Hall about the topical issue of asylum, human rights and the law.

He has also acted for the family of James Hanratty, hanged for the 1962 A6 murder, who are still fighting to clear his name.

He has a long record of human rights involvement, representing Amnesty International in its extradition of former Chilean president General Pinochet.

The 68-year-old partner of Bindman & Partners was a legal adviser for five years to the Commission for Racial Equality and has written extensively on race and law.

Co-ordinator of The Friends of E P Thompson, Pat Woodcock, said Mr Bindman's talk would be stimulating because it was so topical.

"He and Geoffrey Bindman did not know each other, but I know Edward was one of his heroes.

"We're looking forward to it immensely and expect quite few people from the legal profession there."

The lecture will be followed by discussion groups on related themes lead by Zahoor Ahmed, of Worcestershire Racial Equality Council, Cardiff Law School research fellow Luke Clements and Birmingham refugee manager Philip Williams.

E P Thompson shot to fame in the 1960s with his seminal work The Making Of The English Working Class.

The international peace campaigner died at his home in Rushwick in August, 1993.

E P Thompson Day starts at 1pm, with tickets priced at £5 and £2.50 for the unwaged.
