UPTON Rugby Club celebrated its 20th anniversary last weekend with a series of matches and events at their headquarters on the town's playing fields.
Ex-players, current players, backroom staff and social members from the North Midland League One club, met to enjoy a variety of events that began on the Saturday when the Club's Veteran's side (over-35s) played an 'Originals' XV followed by an evening disco. On the Sunday, it was the turn of the Club's first XV to play a President's select XV.
Over previous weeks Club founder, Chris Carkeek had been busy contacting ex-player colleagues interested in playing or in visiting the newly refurbished Clubhouse, many whom have now moved away from the area.
"I tracked a lot of people down, but I'd still be glad to hear from anyone who has at anytime been involved with Upton RFC. It's good to keep in touch," says Chris, who can be contacted on 01905 371365.
In the run-up to the 20th anniversary weekend, the Club had also been raising money for a charitable cause by collecting '20p' pieces from players and other visitors to the Clubhouse. Fundraising will continue throughout the year.
Chris said: "The weekend was a celebration of two decades of quality rugby and everyone is looking forward to the next ten years. Upton RFC will continue to build a strong foundation for continued success for many more years to come. Anyone interested in learning to play rugby or in making a comeback, will be most welcome."
VETERANS 5pts, UPTON ORIGINALS 24pts
A SELECT 'Original' Upton XV travelled from all parts of the country to play the Club's veteran side.
Captained by Chris Carkeek the 'Originals' showed they still had talent and flair to beat tough opposition.
On a beautiful sunny afternoon, and 20 years on from Upton's very first rugby season, players came together to play a hard, truly flowing game. The experience and skill was still there, as the Originals put on the pressure to build a convincing lead.
In spite of a number of substitutions, the Veterans looked tired, as the Originals rucked well setting up a good platform to release an impressive back line. Tries came from Rob Kerr, Mark Symington, Dave Patterson. Club president, Ray Gidley converted all, with an additional penalty in the second half. Returning after an 18-month absence, Veterans' wing Ian Fuller, touched down for a consolation try.
