MALVERN U12's did just enough to defeat a well-organised Dudley Kingswinford squad last Sunday in their last inter-club match of the season at Swindon Road.
DUDLEY KINGSWINFORD U12's 28pts, MALVERN U12's 31pts
The Malvern boys started very well with an opportunistic try from Ben Mason followed by some sustained attacking resulting in a second score from team captain Will Bowen, with both tries converted by Rob Boles. After this, the DK forwards re-grouped and exposed weaknesses in the Malvern defence and weak tackling by the Malvern three-quarters allowed the home team to level the score. However, the backs redeemed themselves in the last moments before half time, when winger David Morgans took Malvern back into the lead with a determined run on to a loose ball.
Malvern's game picked up after the re-start with strong running and supporting play by lock-forward Alex McToal being completed with a second Will Bowen try. Dudley Kingswinford responded well and for the middle period of the second half, the DK forwards dominated and scored a further two tries putting them ahead for the first time by two points with only minutes of playing time remaining.
The last moments of the game saw a Malvern revival and a strong attacking move which involved nearly every Malvern player allowed Will Bowen to claim the winning score. The conversion from Rob Boles was missed.
The win also gives Malvern a good platform on which to launch their challenge at the Stratford-upon-Avon rugby festival this Sunday (April 29) and the more demanding Pontypridd rugby festival where they will meet the best U12 teams from the Principality of Wales on Sunday May 6.
