A CITY centre store which has clinched a prestigious award for its wedding service plans to make it even easier to get married.

Debenhams plc, which has a store in Worcester's High Street, has been presented with a Queen's Award for Enterprise after completing 35,000 wedding lists.

The Worcester store is due to open a new catalogue shop - one of only five in the country - where the bride and bridegroom can order a huge range of products under one roof and ones which they cannot buy in any Debenhams store.

The Wedding Service, which was launched in 1996, became the first on-line service for brides and grooms in the UK.

Carol Stennett, who is manager of the Worcester store, said more than 30 people each week bought wedding gifts using the special wedding service.

She hoped the free innovative service, where the bride and groom use a hand held device to scan the bar code of the items they want on their list, would be available in the store soon.

"I am not surprised we have won the award for innovation because our staff are specially trained in the field and their product knowledge is second to none," said Mrs Stennett.

"We are looking forward to introducing new technology at Worcester where we will be able to offer a full wedding list service.

"We are able to track down all the products and get them together."

At the moment, friends and family of the bride and groom come into the store which is able to pull a list off the computer to help them decide what they want to give as a gift.

Peter Kaursland, managing director of Debenhams plc said the group was proud to have won the award for its state-of-the-art shopping solution.

"Over the past five years we have evolved our service and are now the UK's largest wedding service operator," said Mr Kaursland.

"Around 700,000 guests purchased from us last year."
