A RESIDENTIAL home in Droitwich has had a controversial planning application knocked back.

The Haven, in Worcester Road, wanted to extend its premises to meet new Government legislation.

The laws mean manager Simon Greaves can only have one double room to every three single rooms. To conform to the legislation he must reorganise the premises.

Last year, his application was refused at an appeal because plans featured a gable roof which neighbours said was intrusive.

The new proposals included a flat roof. But Wychavon District Council's planning committee rejected blueprints on Thursday despite recommendations from planning officers who said the new proposals should be accepted because they would not be above existing hedges and fences.

Councillors said the additional building would have an adverse effect on nearby houses.

Cllr Tony Hotham (Con, Hanbury) said: "If we allow this, it's to help the owners' commercial activity when it's not meant to be an issue in the decision making process."

The home cares for 15 residents.

Mr Greaves, aged 31, said: " I want people to know I am not spending £20,000 so I can profit.

"I'm not building more rooms, I am simply addressing legal requirements.

"The councillors were considering the requirements of nearby residents but what about the people who live here?

"They are voters and they have rights too. Now I'm going to have to look at how I can make more room internally, causing more disruption for my elderly residents."
