TOWNSFOLK were left frustrated and angry on Sunday after being turned away from a Redditch tip just a few weeks after it was opened, writes Becky Procter.

The household waste tip in Park Farm has undergone a major refurbishment but scores of motorists were turned away after being told it was full.

Michael Davis, of Headless Cross, visited the Crossgate Road site with a trailer-load of rubbish at 5pm after checking it was open until 6pm.

But when he arrived he was turned away by site operators, who informed him the skips were all full.

He said: "The tip was closed for months, they have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on it and yesterday I was turned away.

"My son checked it was open on the council's website as well. It is a complete farce."

Edward Mitchell, of Oakenshaw, visited the tip at 4.15pm to be told it was full and he could not dispose of his rubbish.

He said: "There was a delay of six months before this centre was opened and the first sign of good weather and it closes.

"What is the point of having this new facility if it can't cope with the amount of rubbish?

"It coped before the refurbishment but now loads of money has been spent, it can't."

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said: "We have contacted Severn Waste Services in order to investigate the details of the closure.

"We regret the inconvenience that the early closure of the site caused to those people wishing to use it but we are confident this occurrence was a one-off situation and Severn Waste will rectify the situation swiftly."
