Racing Club Warwick (1) 1
Bromsgrove Rovers (0) 0
Dr Martens League Western Division
Sunday April 29
ROVERS will have to perform miracles in the last week of the season if they are to avoid a return to a regional level of grass roots football -- a level last played in 30 years ago.
Two weekend defeats against Paget and Warwick leaves the Greens favourites for relegation.
It was, as director of football and caretaker boss Steve Daniels put it, "a horrendous weekend for the club".
Bromsgrove lost to a poor Warwick side who failed to create a goal-scoring chance in 90 minutes, yet won 1-0.
Rovers defended well under moderate pressure for the opening 15 minutes, Rovers getting their first shot on 18 minutes -- Lee Hughes putting Costas Xiourouppa in for a shot which deflected for a corner kick. The next Rovers' effort came on 24 minutes as Hughes shot wide.
Rovers' goal came under a bit more pressure but twice Anthony Watson made covering tackles. The deciding moment of the match came on 34 minutes when Racing Club took the lead. Kevin Elvin floated a free kick into the penalty area, Rovers' 'keeper Jimmy McGettrick attempted to catch the ball in a crowded area but was impeded, and the ball spun loose.
Referee Mr Hawkes saw nothing wrong and Keith Marlow scored.
Rovers pressed forward and Luke Yates created a good chance for Kevin Banner on 44 minutes. Banner (right), however, lost out in a challenge on 'keeper Craig Dutton.
Total control
Bromsgrove totally controlled the second half, enjoying 75 per cent of possession. On 48 minutes Dutton saved at the feet of Xiourouppa, and just four minutes later saved again, this time from Hughes.
Hughes again got in a goal-bound effort on 62 minutes which was blocked. On 74 minutes Yates shot over. Grant Beckett put over a great cross on 77 minutes, but Tim Nicholls fired a shot over the crossbar. Banner crossed for Hughes but his headed attempt was saved by Dutton.
On 85 minutes there was a glorious chance to equalise when Xiourouppa's shot hit Dutton and the ball trickled wide of the post. Adding insult to injury, Rovers were denied a corner.
As time ticked away, Hughes had another goal-bound shot blocked by Marlow.
Rovers: McGettrick, Ball (sub Nicholls H/T), Hughes, Townsend, Frost, Watson, Bridgewater (sub Lloyd 74 mins), Yates, Xiourouppa, Banner, Beckett.
Attendance: 125.
Rovers man of the match: Luke Yates.
