PENSIONERS meeting at a community centre in Rubery hit by a massive increase in charges have won concessions -- for six months.
Charges at Rubery Youth and Community Centre, in New Road, virtually quadrupled after Worcestershire County Council brought them in line with charges elsewhere.
It caused outrage among pensioners who were used to paying 50p per session before it was increased to 75p per person, an hour.
Following a public meeting attend by youth service officers at the centre last Thursday, it was decided to amend the charges for a six-month transition period while further talks are held.
Individuals will now pay 75p an hour for a maximum of two hours, after which users can continue free of charge.
County councillor Peter McDonald (Lab, Rubery), who chaired the meeting, said it was very positive and informative and he hoped, with help from Bromsgrove District Council's leisure services budget, the centre would be able to fulfil its potential.
The youth service, which is specifically aimed at 14 to 25-year-olds, is hoping to encourage users to take group bookings which will work out to be cheaper for them in the long run.
