A HARD-hitting TV commercial depicting the emotional impact of foot-and-mouth is being launched today by The Samaritans.

The advice group has compiled clips from news footage showing the horror of the epidemic on Britain's farming community, tourism and small businesses.

It is hoped the 30-second film will persuade those hit by the crisis that there is no shame in seeking help if it is needed.

The group said volunteers at 203 branches throughout the UK and Ireland will be available to provide confidential emotional support 24 hours a day by phone, letter or in person.

Simon Armson, chief executive of The Samaritans, said: "In a very compelling way this film shows the huge pressure that people are under.

"We can provide a light at the end of the tunnel for those enduring enormous emotional distress as a result of the rural crisis and who may be worried about loss of livelihood."

The advert will be screened for the first time later this week, said a spokeswoman.
