A DETERMINED pensioner is set to embark on a gruelling cycle ride during which he will clock up around 1,000 miles as he raises cash for a Stoke Prior woman.
John Simmonds, a regular at The Butchers Arms, in Stoke Works, will be using a tricycle to travel from Land's End to John O'Groats.
Originally from Scotland, John heard about Linda Brown's plight after the pub, in Shaw Lane, set up an appeal in her name.
Linda has Multiple Sclerosis and needs a pioneering new drug to help improve her health.
The appeal needs to raise £10,000 to pay for the drug for a year so the National Health Service can see the improvement and take over the costs.
A host of activities have been organised by regulars at the pub, including a sponsored head shave and a pool contest and the halfway target is in sight.
Pub worker Martin Cole said: "We are all really proud of John.
"The journey is around 800 miles, but because he doesn't like being on main roads and foot and mouth restrictions, he will cover 1,000 miles in three weeks."
To sponsor John or donate cash to the appeal, drop into the pub or call bar staff on (01527) 832372.
