WORLD-famous fertility expert Robert Winston is to give Wyre Forest MP David Lock's General Election campaign a shot-in-the arm - by backing his controversial stance on the loss of services at Kidderminster General Hospital.

Lord Winston was due to visit the hospital's minor injuries unit this afternoon to call for an end to "old battles".

The Labour peer said he wanted to give support to Mr Lock's "vision for the future" of the hospital.

Richard Taylor - who is standing against Mr Lock as a protest candidate - was one of those invited to attend the event.

Lord Winston said he supported Mr Lock's view there was no way A&E services which were axed from the hospital last year could return.

"He's perfectly right to say there are complex medical issues and I've no doubt he has behaved with impressive integrity in difficult circumstances" said the peer.

"The local consultants and GPs both back the changes at Kidderminster Hospital and say it's not medically safe to bring back emergency services.

"They have the support of the Health Authority, the Acute Trust and the Primary Care Trust.

"In those circumstances David Lock is right to say we must look forward to develop services, not seek to fight old battles."

Lord Winston was also planning to comment on the Health Concern campaign to oust Mr Lock from the Wyre Forest seat, which he won in 1997.

He said he believed the medical community was right to say keeping a full range of emergency services at Kidderminster was not a medical option.

"David Lock has done the right thing by telling the truth, despite the strident voices trying to condemn him," he added.

Mr Lock was expected to use the event to set down a 10-point plan for health care in Kidderminster.
