SCOTT Stamps could have been Kidderminster Harriers' goal hero at the weekend - but the reality proved very different.
The left-back had been chosen to take a penalty in the supposedly unlikely event they would ever be awarded one this season.
Yet after 26 minutes of the penultimate game of the season against Hartlepool on Saturday, Harriers had been given their first in Division Three - to everybody's surprise.
Stamps, and his manager Jan Molby, were also shocked when confident target-man Drewe Broughton picked up the ball to take the spot-kick - and saw his shot saved.
The 26-year-old defender admitted: "Ian Foster is our usual taker but he's injured so I said I'd take them.
"But Drewe ran and got the ball, put it down and unluckily missed. At least he had the nerve to take it.
"If we had gone 1-0 up by half-time, we would have won the game but it didn't happen."
Molby added: "Our penalty surprised everybody. They could have no complaints but it was poorly struck."
Stamps, who is still searching for his first goal in the Football League for Harriers, said: "It was a very poor game for us. We didn't get going from the first to the last minute. They deserved the three points.
"Their goal was down to slack marking from us. Tim Clarke has pulled off two world-class saves earlier.
"Hartlepool are not the best team we have played against. They had a few big lads up-front and used them well."
And the wish for the final game at York City is Harriers' long-awaited first double of the season.
Stamps added: "Hopefully, we are going to get three points and see the season off with a victory."
