I FEEL I must defend myself over the letter from Jane Nott (Shuttle, April 19) and others of like-minded opinion, against the accusation that I know nothing of farming methods etc.

Before I came to live in this area I worked in a company which bought livestock for slaughter, and as a veterinary assistant.

Both brought me into direct contact with the farming community and their farming ways.

This latest "crisis" has convinced me more than ever that farmers are over-protected by subsidies financed by taxpayers.

I feel more inclined to buy red meat from organic farmers who, arguably, may have a more legitimate case for the receipt of subsidies.

I would willingly pay more for my meat.

On animal welfare, my endeavours to monitor and act upon these issues, be they commercial or not, are more than likely greater than any farmers'.
