WHEN conditions are in his favour, Wellbeing will be a force to be reckoned with over a mile and a half in Britain this year, and he can improve his already-impressive wins-to-runs ratio by taking the Sagitta Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow.
The going at Headquarters is just on the easy side of good, which should suit Henry Cecil's charge and if he gets a good gallop early on, then he can complete a hat-trick of wins in pattern company.
Indeed, Wellbeing's only defeat last year came when fifth in the Vodafone Derby after his preparation was ruined by a late setback which almost saw him miss the race.
And the very fact that Cecil was prepared to let the son of Sadler's Wells take his chance in the big race suggests that the four-year-old must be a decent animal.
He signed off last season with an impressive win in the John Porter Stakes at Newbury, beating Mareinbard and Boreas in impressive fashion, despite looking as if he was struggling in the heavy conditions with half a mile to travel.
Wellbeing's recent work on the gallops suggests that Cecil has him straight enough for this, his first outing since that run last October, and he can take this Group Three prize before going on to better things.
Another prolific winner, Katy Nowaitee, looks something of a banker in the Directa Personal Dahlia Stakes.
Peter Harris's string have been needing their first run so far this season and the five-year-old is expected to have come on considerably for her first outing of the season last month, when last of six (albeit beaten only a total of four lengths) in the Earl of Sefton Stakes.
That was a better contest than this and she appeared unsuited by the muddling early pace, which turned the contest into something of a sprint from thetwo-furlong marker.
With the advantage of that run under her belt, Katy Nowaitee can return to the winning ways in this Listed contest, having scored on all three of her outings last year.
Early Morning Mist looks to have possibilities in the H & K Commissions Stakes (Showcase Handicap).
Mark Johnston's filly still looked green but showed marked improvement from her debut when winning a nice maiden at Ascot on her second start last August.
She was put away for the winter afterwards and has a deal more scope forimprovement than most of her rivals here, even though the handicapper hasn't taken many chances in allotting her a handicap mark of 85.
Theatre Script is regarded as one to follow by some shrewd judges and is quite prominent in the betting for the Vodafone Derby with some firms, despite having only seen the racecourse once.
With John Gosden's team in good form, it is worth taking a chance on hisfitness and relative lack of experience in the Pearl and Coutts Newmarket Stakes.
