LEAGUE matches became the centre of attention for clubs last week after recent cup competitions which are now drawing to a conclusion.

The biggest upset was the 8-1 defeat inflicted on second in the table RBL (Pinvin) by sixth-placed The Old Oak (Drakes Broughton).

Stand-in captain George Beard certainly rallied his troops as they stormed into a 6-0 lead after the doubles and first set of singles.

He then found himself the only defeated warrior as Angela Cory prevented a whitewash. Brian Male, John Bird, Karen Izod and Pat Corbett completed the double on the night.

The Swan (Birlingham) were in no mood to be generous as they kept their championship aspirations alive with a good win at the Chequers (Crowle).

Swan soon found themselves in trouble after the doubles, trailing 2-1, but strong play in the singles saw them recover their ground and run out 6-3 winners. Beryl Brown and Clive Stip-pling both recorded a double.

Fourth-placed Pershore FC went down 5-4 to the Old Chestnut Tree (Lower Wick). John Byrde clearly had his team up for the match as they took an early 3-0 lead.

Some pride was restored in the singles as the football club hit back, but an out of form 'Tiny' Philpotts couldn't cope with the pressure of double winner, Byrde and his defeat was the difference in the final analysis.
