PLAYED in appalling conditions of strong wind and driving rain, the Rummer Cup, a mixed medal event at Broad-way, was won by Tony and Joan Gisbourne who recorded a net 75.5 having received 14.5 shots.

Under the circumstances it was a fine score with the low trajectory of Tony's play particularly effective.

John Welch and lady captain Denise Parker finished second on 76.5 having received 18.5 shots while third place went to Steven Gilks and Lyn Chambers with a net 80, gross 86.

Big hitting Richard Cox has finally broken his duck. A fine gross 76, playing off eight, meant that he finished first and wins a trip to Saunton Sands later in the year with professional Martyn Freeman.

He now also has the more immediate problem of an instant handicap reduction to seven.

Cox's fine performance of Cox resulted in a three-shot victory margin over Gerry O'Hagen (net 71) who, in turn, just eclipsed Mick Sandalls and Martin Dore on countback.

There was another day of triumph for the younger O'Hagens, Chris. Playing off ten he recorded a gross 78 to win the Division One medal, and with it a handicap reduction to nine.

Brother Paul filled third spot with a gross 80, net 69.

In between, and losing on a countback, was six-handicapper Chubb Campbell who recorded the level best gross of the day of 74, tied with Shaun Thornhill, which resulted in a welcome return to category one handicap status.

Campbell's performance was admirable under the circumstances of a round played at a funereal pace despite the youthful nature of his group.

John Bidwell showed signs of form by recording a top ten finish for the first time.

With a gross 85, net 69, Barry Wright secured first place in the Division Two medal ahead of Peter Dyke (88-18-70) followed by Keith Munro one shot further back.

The ladies played for the Margaret Roberts Trophy in rainy conditions using just three clubs and a putter.

Jenny Bruton (102-20-82) was the winner on countback from Sally Campbell (103-21-82).

THE annual round of the Douglas Bader Foundation tournament was staged on the Red Course in beautiful conditions last Sunday.

Sixteen pairs entered and the winners were Geoff Burton and Marion Kirkland.

Scores: 1 G Burton & M Kirkland 36pts; 2 Ken & Joan Hunt 34 (cb); 3 Gerald & Enid Walker 34; 4 Graham & Gill Byng 33.

Seniors section captain, Ray Smart, was delighted when his team halted a run of defeats by defeating local rivals The Vale 5-1.

The captain, partnered by Ken Hardacre, was one of the day's winners, sharing success with Derek Lambert and Ken Brown, Peter Gilbert and Brian Tomkins and Geoff Roberts and Idris Cooper. Brian Chapman and Doug Bott and Hugh Homer and Gerald Ricketts halved their matches.

The boot was firmly on the other foot when the A/B team visited The Vale and had only one winning pair - Gerald Walker and Steve Wood - in a 5-1 reverse.

The scratch team fared slightly better but still lost out 3-2 to their local rivals.

Craig Moss was the sole winner, while Stuart Ridley and Richard Minton both earned a half.
