a post-holocaust world is the setting for the latest play from the Malvern Theatre Players.
The Chrysalids is an adaptation of the John Wyndham novel and has been chosen by Malvern Theatres' resident company to involve a number of young people, aged 8 to 15, in the principal roles.
The production uses a mix of adult and young actors as part of the company's determination to provide young performers with the opportunity to star in events at the town's principal venue.
Written from a young person's point of view, The Chrysalids tells of a world where a group of children have the power to communicate telepathically and where society is divided at birth by banishing 'imperfect' babies to be looked after by Fringe people.
Director Lee Farley is a professional actor with extensive experience of working with young people. He uses unusual presentation techniques, including video projections, and has tried to enliven the play by the use of contemporary music.
Author John Wyndham was born John Benyon Harris in 1903 and worked in farming, law, commercial art and advertising before turning to writing in 1925. In 1951, Day of the Triffids was published, followed in 1958 by The Chrysalids.
The production runs from Wednesday (May 9) to Saturday, May 12 and starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8.50, available from the box office on 01684 892277.
