THE April lecture was by Mr Roy Willmott, entitled "Historic Earlswood".
He went right back to the Earl of Warwick's woodland landscape of the 1400s and then, by showing slides of ancient maps, old manuscripts, Victorian postcards and copies of correspondence from the engineering departments of the railway and canal companies of the time, led members through the 1900s.
This included the development of public roads and footpaths in the area, and the creation of the three famous lakes which not only supplied the local canal system with water but became such a favourite destination for local day trippers, who saw Earlswood as "the Scarborough of the Midlands."
Anyone interested in aspects of local history is invited to join Wythall History Society's monthly meetings, which are held on Friday evenings.
