THIEVES made off with 29 birds in two separate raids on homes in Stourport on the same evening. Leslie Case surveys the aviary from which 14 canaries were stolen.
Bird-owners are being warned by police to be on their guard following the thefts, which happened at aviaries in two back gardens, last Thursday.
In the first incident, 14 canaries were stolen from the garden of a house in Power Station Road. Peter Case, 60, said he and his wife Anne, 55, who have kept birds for 10 years, were very distressed by the loss of adult and fledgling canaries.
He said the theft of adult birds, which had been rearing their young, had already led to the death of two fledglings.
He added that he feared other young, which are currently being hatched, could also die.
And he appealed to those responsible to return the birds.
In a second incident, 15 budgies were taken from an aviary in a garden in Mill Close.
Anyone with any information about these thefts is asked to contact Kidderminster Police on 01562 820888, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
