EVESHAM road racer Ted Roebuck had a pleasant surprise when called into the office at Mallory Park on Sunday.

Roebuck, riding his sponsored Chapman/Tyrell Racing Honda GP 125 in the third round of the East Midland Racing Association Championships, feared the worst after previous experiences but he needn't have worried as officials presented him with the Rider of the Day accolade.

It was a richly deserved award after Roebuck had raced to two wins in the GP 125cc class supported race.

Racing hard against the current championship leader, he took the lead in the opening race and, not knowing how far ahead he was he pushed all the way to win by a massive ten seconds.

Roebuck was again off the line in fine style in the second event and was never headed as he took the chequered flag by four seconds.

He clocked an average speed of 90.32mph in the first race, lapping the Leicestershire circuit in a time of 54.6 seconds.

He was slightly slower second time around in the six-lap event.

Two first place trophies, the Bikesport sponsored award and a hat all combined to make it a memorable afternoon for the Evesham racer and make up for the disappointment of being unable to compete on the Isle of Man this year after the cancellation of the TT Races due to the Foot and Mouth outbreak.

Shipston rider Mark Steed finished third behind Roebuck in the opening clash on his CT Honda 125 and then added a fifth place finish in race two after getting stuck behind a back marker.

Simon Andrews, the 18-year-old from Wickhamford tackled the demanding 2.7 mile international circuit at Oulton Park with a new determination that has now put him up with the leading riders.

The teenager made Super Pole for the second week in succession after smashing his personal best time during qualifying.

He bettered his personal best time during qualifying, by three places, moving him into ninth spot on the grid despite still being sore and stiff from last weekend's crash.

However, Andrews suffered mechanical failure during the race after keeping up with the leading group of riders.

Andrews, though, has taken it on the chin and will be working on getting fit for the next round at Brands Hatch on June 17.

On the same day, Pete Jennings will be hoping old friend Ron Haslam has worked the magic on his Knotts Motorcycles Honda 125.

Jennings qualified sixth fastest at Oulton Park last Saturday but a lack of speed again cost him dear during Sunday's British Cham-pionship outing and he could only manage 12th place.

"The bike has gone up to Ron's Derby home and he has promised to try and sort out the problems before Brands," said Jennings.

"It's all proved rather frustrating so far but we will be hoping to rescue an ailing season next time out."
