THE Wyastone Concert Hall in the Wye Valley has announced its summer series for June and July with a programme that has more than a hint of Malvern about it.
The new series sees a wide range of talent, from internationally renowned musicians to comedy revue at the venue between Ross and Monmouth.
Highlights of the series include sitar player Anoushka Shankar, the 19-year-old daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, who will appear at the hall as part of her debut solo UK tour. She will be joined on stage on June 2 by Bikram Ghosh and Tanmoy Bose on tabla.
The Malvern-based English Symphony Orchestra returns to Wyastone under artistic director William Boughton. Soloist Leon McCawley joins the orchestra for a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 1 in C (Op 15), as well as work by Schubert, Elgar and Mozart.
Violinist Daniel Hope will perform works by Schubert, Prokofiev and Elgar with Sebastian Knauer on piano on June 15, while Russian male soprano Igor Ishack will perform works by composers including Handel, Mozart, Gluck and Meyerbeer the following day.
The Schubert Ensemble of London performs Schubert's "Trout" Quintet in A (D667), along with works by Martin Butler and Faur on June 29.
Bawdy 16th and 17th Century tavern music arrives at the hall on June 30, in the shape of The City Waites. The music that the quartet performs, on period instruments, was the pop music of its day.
On July 1, the Bochmann String Quartet will perform music by Mozart, Shostakovich and Beethoven, while Mr Bochmann's ESO colleague, Alasdair Malloy, will be teaching children to "Rustle Up A Rhythm" in a percussion workshop for primary and secondary school pupils on July 6.
Members of one of the world's leading chamber ensembles, Fine Arts Brass, will apply their virtuoso skills and exuberant sense of fun to works by composers from Handel, through Glinka, Arnold, Leonard Bernstein and Count Basie on July 7.
Singer/pianist Richard Rodney Bennett entertains the audience on July 14, while young musicians from around the Malvern area form Bravura, who, under direction by Janet Masters will perform works by Grieg, Bach, Vivaldi and Shostokovich on July 17.
Revue artists Kit and The Widow will take a humorous look at the world of opera on July 21, with the help of mezzo-soprano Melanie Marshall.
