HEREFORDSHIRE made a disastrous start to their defence of the ECB 38 County Cup when they crashed by 79 runs to Wales in their first group match at Pontardulais yesterday.
Chasing 182 to win, they slumped to 9-4 with three batsmen being dismissed for ducks, and then 39-7.
Only the later efforts of Neeraj Prabhu (28), Kevin Cooper (24) and Paul Thomas (22) lifted them into three figures as they finished on 102 all out.
Wales earlier totalled 181-7 in their 50 overs with former Hereford-shire player Jamie Sylvester top-scoring with 43. He put on 87 for the first wicket with Mike Newbold (37).
Herefordshire open their Minor Counties Championship Western Division programme on Sunday when they take on Dorset at Bourne-mouth.
All championship mat-ches this season are of three days' duration.
