Britain has been held back by under-investment in education.
The Conservatives failed to fund schools and colleges adequately. Labour has done too little to put things right.
In schools they have invested in paperwork, not people, demoralised teachers and created a mountain of bureaucracy.
The Liberal Democrats have clear goals and we are determined to reach them. We guarantee to introduce the extra funding needed by putting just one penny on income tax - about the price of a pint of beer a week for the average wage earner.
Our commitments cover 38 policies that address the problems facing our education system.
Some of these are:
l Funding 5,000 additional secondary teacher places, 1,250 primary teacher places and 40,000 extra classroom assistants.
l Cutting class sizes to 25 for all 5-11 year olds and a maximum of 18 for all secondary classes with practical element such as science or maths.
Increasing the funding for books and science equipment.
Scrapping tuition fees.
Recruiting more trainee teachers by paying a training salary, not a grant.
The Liberal Democrats strongly believe the education of our children is the key to Britain's future prosperity.
