LECTURERS at a Bromsgrove college staged a picket yesterday following a dispute over pay.
Around half of the lecturers at New College, in Blackwood Road, who are members of NATFHE, the university and college lecturer's union, chose not to turn up to class.
They held an early morning protest in a bid to encourage others to back their plea.
Over 30,000 lecturers nationwide were also set to take action yesterday to back the union's pay claim for a flat rate increase of £3,000 for all lecturers and managers.
NATFHE's industrial action is aimed at closing the growing pay gap between college and school teachers which currently stands at ten per cent.
National pay talks between the union and the employers' body, the Association of Colleges, on May 15, resulted in an offer of just three per cent.
NEW College lecturer Barbara Walters said students had been told their lecturers may not be available to teach them yesterday and it was up to the college to make other arrangements.
She added: "I hope we can reach a resolution."
