PERSHORE'S talented Operatic and Dramatic Society (PODS) is looking forward to a new challenge by taking its production of the classic musical comedy Me and My Girl to Worcester's Swan Theatre next month.
It will be the first time in its 12 year history that PODS has performed a major production outside the town. The switch to the big stage is because Pershore's leisure centre is being refurbished, depriving PODS of its usual summer venue.
David Hemmings, PODS secretary, explained: "When we first heard about the temporary closure of the leisure centre we were determined to continue major summer productions.
"We look on this positively - as an opportunity to entertain even more people than usual with all the benefits to both cast and audiences that a purpose-built theatre provides."
He added: "At the same time, we acknowledge the challenge PODS face. All our productions represent a major financial commitment, and we're counting on our many usual supporters to keep faith with us by following us to the 'Faithful City,' and to make it as easy as possible to do so, PODS has arranged return coach transport from Pershore for most performances."
Me and My Girl has delighted theatregoers with its heart-warming story of the working class Cockney Bill thrust into the English aristocracy as the newly discovered Hareford family heir. Can Bill, played by Phil Nicholson, abandon his roots and his Cockney sweetheart Sally, played by Maxine Sherwood. Will Bill fall victim to the fortune hunting Lady Jacqueline, Tessa Carter, or the machinations of her mother, the Duchess, Judy Megarry, who is set against Sally? Featuring foot tapping favourites like The Sun Has Got His Hat On, Leaning on a Lamp Post, and The Lambeth Walk, the show runs at The Swan Theatre from June 19-23 (7.30pm) with a Saturday afternoon matinee.
Tickets are available from Blue in Broad Street and Number 8 in High Street, Pershore, Mrs Sherwood on 01386 750296 and the Swan Theatre box office on 01905 27322.
