KIND-HEARTED members of a Stourport WI group are showing their creative side to bring a smile to the face of Third World children. Cookley's Barbara Shenton and Lickhill WI member Audrey Lamprell show off the colourful boxes of teddies.
The Lickhill WI group, based at Stourport Community Centre, Lickhill Road, is taking part in the national Teddies for Tragedies project to knit the cuddly toys for youngsters with little to cherish in deprived countries.
The idea was brought to them by Cookley's Barbara Shenton, who discovered doctors working in Third World countries believe children with a teddy to cuddle in their cot get better quicker than those who do not have one.
She said: "It seemed a very interesting fact about how a teddy can speed up a child's recovery, and if a project so simple can help in such a big way then it has to be worth taking part in.
"Basically, when emergency medical aid leaves Britain for Third World countries, the rescue teams take these teddies with them."
The teddies are sent to a firm in Evesham, which has distributed 12,500 toys to countries affected by war and natural disasters since 1996.
