MALVERN residents are being urged to make a stand against litter and clean up their communities with the help of the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust.

The trust, formed in 1998 by the Worcester Heat Systems chairman Cecil Duckworth, already supports clean-ups in Worcester, clearing an estimated 10 tonnes of litter in a two week initiative last month.

Now it is inviting Malvern people to become volunteer litter wardens and join regular anti-litter initiatives.

The trust offers wardens a litter picker, litter bags and gloves, support from its own operatives and removal of refuse collected. It will also organise bi-annual meetings, where wardens can share ideas and experiences.

"People have always moaned about litter. There are a few who spoil it for the majority," said the trust's head warden, Stephen Thomas, of Malvern.

"Volunteers may clear up their site once a month or be involved in organising a larger community litter picking event. They would also be responsible for reporting any major fly-tipping problems within their area."

Mr Thomas said the trust could achieve more with the help of local people.

"It could be a green space on the front of their houses, the alleyways behind them or it could be their road, it's so simple," he said.

Anyone interested in getting involved, should ring Mr Thomas on 07968 477816 or the trust office on 01905 449343.

Already this year, several groups have been involved in community clear-ups in Malvern, including Malvern Hills Agenda 21 and residents in Elgar Avenue, Oak Crescent and Pickersleigh.
