STAFF and pupils at a Worcester school have an addition to one of their quads, which could see it become a garden of sanctuary.

The centrepiece in the garden at Bishop Perowne CE High School is a newly-made metal cross, made by a visiting blacksmith.

Workshops

The artist-in-residence, blacksmith Paul Shepherd, has spent the past two weeks at the school holding workshops.

As well as helping students with their art coursework he has spent time on his own masterpieces.

The cross, which is 5ft in height, is made from steel, brass and aluminium, its centrepiece is a flame.

"The cross is a really nice piece of art," said Elaine Rogers of Bishop Perowne CE High School.

"We already have a crucifix in the entrance hall at the school, which Paul made many years ago.

Makeover

"He suggested that the lawn area would make a nice quiet area, so we're thinking about having a makeover.

"Paul's been great. I've seen some children who weren't motivated make things you would be happy to have in your garden."

The cross will now be the focus of a sanctuary garden at the Merriman's Hill school, which will be created within one of the quadrangles.

Professional

Mr Shepherd has been a professional blacksmith for 15 years.

In the past he has made special one-off pieces of furniture and has worked on the front gates at Kensington Palace.

He supplies galleries around the country and has shown his work at a number of exhibitions.

Mr Shepherd has also made a unique candlestick for the best technology pupil of the year.
