CALLOW Hill rider Jason Wilshaw closed the gap on his championship rival at the weekend after Mark Pinkey's engine blew at Anglesey.
Wilshaw came in second in the second points race at Ty Croes to narrow the gap to three points in the Classics Club Post Classics Superbikes series.
Last year's runner-up Wilshaw secured second place in all his four races with two of them points scoring contests in the series.
And with Pinkney, who beat Wilshaw to the title last season, forced to retire in the final event on Sunday, the Callow Hill ace held on behind Anglesey rider Pete Thorne to claim 15 points and reach 77 after five rounds.
Pinkney won the first trophy race on Saturday and the first points event before pulling out of Sunday's trophy, which Thorne won.
After Pinkney retired in the final event a win would have put Wilshaw in front in the series but Thorne stayed in front in the wet.
Third placed Kevin Richards is trailing on 51 points with the next round of the series at Croft on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday 24.
Wilshaw's father Chris is recovering after his horror smash at Mallory Park three weeks ago.
Chris, 54, was put into a coma at Queens Hospital, Nottingham after a high speed smash but was transferred to Solihull at the weekend after regaining consciousness and the use of his limbs.
The family hope he will be released from hospital in a month.
