AVONCROFT Saturday Seconds maintained their unbeaten start to the season, but were unable to break through the stubborn resistance of visitors Old Halesonians, having to settle for a winning draw.
Having been asked to bat first, Avoncroft's innings was built around a partnership of 106 for the second wicket between Pete Whitehead and Richard Doodey.
Doodey continued his early season form with 34, but it was Whitehead who stole the show with a dynamic 73 before he was dismissed by the nagging bowling of James (3-36).
Wickets followed at regular intervals, and it was only due to an unbeaten last wicket stand of 25 between Andy Pittam (18 not out) and Paul Athey (13 not out), that Croft were able to claim their final batting point, finishing on 202-9.
Croft's domination continued as Athey took two wickets in the first over of the reply, to leave the visitors in disarray.
After a brief fight back, Old Halesonians were again placed firmly on the back foot by the bowling of Anthony Pittam.
His guile and flight earned him four valuable wickets, and reduced Old Halesonians to 65-8.
Victory was within Croft's grasp, but despite every effort from Croft's seven bowlers, only one more wicket fell in the last 20 overs.
Hussain, batting with more ability and resolve than any team mate, made 35 not out, and James (seven not out) as Old Halesonians finished on 139-9.
