Benjamin Jones, labourer, Hopwood, charged with assaulting police constables Bevan and Symons while in the execution of their duty at Hopwood.
Pc Bevan stated that when he took the prisoner into custody he asked him to go along quietly but instead of doing so Jones tripped him three times.
Witness then handcuffed him.
The prisoner kicked him five times on the legs and once on the shoulder.
Several of the prisoner's companions then started about the police and handled them somewhat roughly.
Pc Symons was injured very badly, his face being cut in several places; his helmet was also smashed.
The other assailants have yet to be arrested.
