ON May 22 at the Greig Hall, Kate from The Samaritans gave an interesting and thought-provoking talk on this caring service, started by the Anglican priest Chad Vara in 1953.
The branch in Stratford has charitable status and a phoneline (01789 298866) open 24 hours every day of the year.
E-mailing, writing or personal appointments are also available.
Kate defined a Samaritan as someone who 'just listens'.
The service offered is totally confidential, the listeners completely non-judgemental (not related to any class, politics, religion) and no advice is given, the individual arriving at their own decision through talking.
Anyone and everyone can call The Samaritans and talk about any problem - family, drugs, depression, loneliness.
Twenty suicide attempts are made every hour, 77 per cent are men, 6,000 people succeed in committing suicide each year in the UK.
Samaritans are volunteers, offering four hours each week and are thoroughly trained, prepared and supported throughout their training, during work and after hours.
The vote of thanks was given by Wendy Elmes. The raffle was won by Shirley McCauley.
The next meeting is on June 5, and will be a closed meeting with bring and share supper and silent auction.
Please note the coach for the London trip leaves from Greig Hall on Saturday, June 9, at 9am prompt.
