A Stourport man who came close to death after taking an ecstasy pill told a jury that it was "ludicrous" that he should be accused of peddling the drug.

Adam Godfrey said he went into a coma five years ago after taking a single tablet at a nightclub. He was put on a life support machine and spent four days in intensive care in hospital.

That experience made him biased against the drug although he admitted at Worcester Crown Court that he still used cannabis.

Mr Godfrey, 25, of Barnfield Road was cleared of having ecstasy and cannabis intending to supply to other people.

The former mobile phone salesman was arrested on August 25 last year when police raided the house where he rented a room in High Grove Court, Kidderminster. Cannabis worth £600 and 200 Ecstasy tablets were found in his BMW car.

Scales, which he said he used for cooking, were found in the house and bore traces of cannabis. He denied knowledge of a dealer's list which was found in a friend's van parked outside.

He said other people had driven his car and he had given lifts to others. He denied the drugs belonged to him.

Mr Godfrey said he had been smoking cannabis "as a pastime" for some years. He tried not to drink so he had a spliff after work to help him relax.
