DURING National Volunteers Week (June 1-7), and in the United Nations' International Year of Volunteering, I would like to say a public thank you to the committed supporters and Macmillan Cancer Relief Committee in Worcestershire, who raise over £100,000 each year.

Macmillan Cancer Relief funds cancer care nurses, doctors, buildings and information, and without our volunteer supporters we would not be able to make as much of a difference as we do. We now have 15 Macmillan nurses and a Macmillan consultant caring for people with cancer in the county. Less well-known is the Macmillan Patient Grant Scheme, which gives direct aid to patients who are in financial hardship. Last year £27,000 was given for whole range of purposes such as fares to hospital for treatment, help with fuel bills, even for convalescent holiday break.

Macmillan's volunteers are right at the heart of the charity, but the more support we have, the more we can help people with cancer. Volunteering is often in the form of membership of a committee or a support group, but administrative help is also welcomed in our local fundraising offices. If you would like to find out more about becoming a regular supporter of Macmillan then please contact me on 01676 535452.
