BRITISH Waterways has issued a warning to youngsters in Wyre Forest of the dangers of swimming in rivers, reservoirs and canals.
With warm weather here and summer on the way, children and teenagers are being urged to think water safety around areas like the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.
Jonathan Green, local British Waterways, manager said the water was far colder than expected and could cause cramps in the strongest of swimmers, leading to death by drowning.
In addition, he said most canals were quite shallow and people could risk serious injury if they dived into them.
Objects and sluice machinery beneath the surface also posed further dangers, as did underwater currents caused by passing boats and water movements.
He added: "On a hot summer day the idea of jumping in the canal may seem appealing but it is a dangerous thing to do.
"Canals were built to be used by boat traffic, not by swimmers. The best way to enjoy your local canal is to take part in organised activities such as taking a boat trip, cycling, canoeing, walking, or attending one of our many events."
