Labour has proved over the last four years that Britain can have both a strong economy and investment in public services.
Tony Blair's government has brought us the lowest interest rates for 20 years, low inflation and the lowest employment for a generation. At the same time we now have the biggest hospital building programme since the Second World War, millions of pounds for new school buildings, rising standards in our children's classrooms and falling crime. Britain has also found new respect on the world stage. If Britain elects another Labour government we will keep mortgages and inflation low, strengthen the economy further and work towards full employment. We will invest in the national health service, appointing 20,000 more nurses, building new hospitals, cutting waiting lists and increasing help for heart and cancer patients. There will be 10,000 more teachers, and new standards for literacy and numeracy in our secondary schools. We will fight crime with 6,000 more police, and we will guarantee help for pensioners and increase the minimum wage to £4.20 per hour.
