AS the county council elections get closer, the Evening News continues its look at the issues which will be faced by the next council.
Today, the environment comes under scrutiny and the challenges the Environmental Services Delivery Plan 2001 will create. Under the plan, the council will have to:
- Encourage sustainability. Councillors will have to look at ways to promote sustainable thinking from an early age, which will include teacher training and resource packs for Worcestershire schools.
- Waste management will have to be addressed to deliver fully integrated and sustainable methods to meet the Government targets.
- Flooding will need to be addressed with work undertaken to prepare a county flood plan.
- The council will need to deliver the Local Transport Plan.
- Economic regeneration to improve the quality of life in the county will have to be addressed.
- The promotion of Worcestershire through the implementation of tourist strategies.
- Implementing the county structure plan and overseeing planning guidelines, as delivered by district councils, for housing and development across the county.
- Through the Trading Standards service, the council will be responsible for continuing the current programme of consumer protection and developing on-line self-help resource.
