England's Nick Knight ended yesterday with a dropped slip catch and started today with another when the Old Trafford Test resumed on a bleak Manchester morning.
But the miss did not prove expensive when Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif was run out for a Test-best 71 from 146 minutes and 114 balls in the fourth over to be ninth out at 380.
Knight, normally one of the safest of catchers, put down Saqlain Mushtaq in the penultimate over yesterday, and off the fifth ball of the second day grassed a chance offered by Latif in Darren Gough's first over.
Latif, 64 overnight in Pakistan's 370-8, was squared up by the England fast bowler and second slip Knight could not grasp the ball going to his right.
But conditions were hardly conducive to sharp catching with another brisk, cold wind blowing from the north and whistling around the buildings.
Saqlain (21no) and skipper Waqar Younis put on 23 for the last wicket before Gough trapped Waqar lbw for five to end the innings on 403.
