IN You Say on May 24, Mr Richards asks some very pertinent questions regarding the costs of providing the Perdiswell park-and-ride scheme.

If I may, I would like to pose two further questions - although whether either of us will ever receive the answers is a moot point.

First - when do people use the facility? Certainly on a weekday it would appear that the car park is largely deserted until after the rush-hour is over, when shoppers arrive.

While this is useful, shoppers are generally spread out over the entire day and so are unlikely to lead to congestion. Furthermore, when the proposed (and approved by the council) Tallow Hill and The Butts shopping complex car parks come on stream, these will offer a more tempting free service which may well lead to a drop of park-and-ride users.

Second - from where do the users travel? There is mounting evidence pointing towards former train users now driving to Perdiswell from Droitwich because this is cheaper.

This means that the facility is actually generating traffic movements rather than reducing them.

Forgetting the political point scoring, there are many serious issues here which must be resolved before any further park-and-ride schemes are contemplated.
