BUDDING radio stars in Worcestershire are being given the chance to take to the airwaves with their own station for a year-long pilot project.
The Radio Authority is invited community broadcasting groups to apply for a slot in next year's Access Radio scheme.
Its aim is to let the future regulator know whether Access Radio is a viable concept and, if it is introduced in the future, how it might be licensed, regulated, funded, promoted and organised.
The Radio Authority wants would-be broadcasters to write in outlining their interests. From there, a dozen shortlisted groups will be asked to apply in full.
"To be considered for applying for the scheme, proposed pilots must demonstrate evidence of social gain or public service aims," said a Radio Authority spokesman.
"They could be a small-scale neighbourhood scheme or designed to serve a community interest.
"And they need to demonstrate appropriate expertise and funding to start broadcasting on January 1, 2002, probably maintaining the pilot for a one-year period.
"The other stipulation is they mustn't be fully commercially-funded."
Groups applying from areas on its local licence "working list", regions where a radio station has been set up recently or in the coverage area of any new Independent Local Radio service launched less than a year ago, will be excluded.
Applicants should write to Susan Williams, Development Officer, Radio Authority, Holbrook House, 14 Great Queen Street, London WC2B 5DG by the end of next month.
Organisers say letters should outline the project, showing how it qualifies, including its location and anticipated coverage area.
They should also include details of the station's content and style, how many hours per day it intends to broadcast and a description of the background of the group applying.
