STRIKE bowler Phil Knight produced match-winning figures of 6-58 in Worcester Cricket Club's eight-run victory over Wellington at Norton.

The visitors won the toss and put Worcester into bat on a dry pitch.

They made steady progress with Andy Mason scoring 27, Mark Chambers 16 and Ian Stowe 11 before all-rounder, Chris Smedley, gave the innings a boost with a sound 37.

He received support from Dan McKay (24no) and Adam Binks (22) as the innings closed on a modest 174-8 in the 55th over.

Wellington's innings collapsed to 59-5, but Downes (53) and Will Clarke (44) rescued the situation.

Worcester then suffered a cruel blow when they lost Phil Symmonds and Andrew Van Vuuren, both with torn hamstrings, within the space of six overs.

Knight removed Downes with the score on 140 and then Clarke was run out on the same score to shift the balance back to Worcester.

Skipper Mason dismissed numbers eight and 10 batsmen to terminate Wellington's innings on 166.

Worcester are now sixth in the table having taken 20 points to Wellington's 5.

Worcester's second team drew with Wellington in the reverse fixture.

Wellington batted first and made a solid 194-8 in their 50 overs.

The pick of the Worcester bowlers was Julian Rickman with 6-81.

Worcester, who were facing defeat when they slumped to 30-5, were rescued by 15-year-old Chris Cornes, who produced a match saving innings.

The youngster struck an an aggressive 70 including ten 4's and two 6's, as Worcester managed to reach 132-7.

Worcester scored six points to Wellington's nine.
