YOUNGSTER Jamie Hyde's breakthrough into Worcester City's first team was good news for the club, according to head of scouting Graham Selby.

The talented left winger broke into the team and scored a memorable goal in the Dr Martens League Cup Final to cap a promising season.

"We have done very well in recent years in getting Worcester players through," said Selby.

"Jamie Hyde has done enough to break into the first team but he has got to push himself on and reach the next stage.

"He beats people on the left but has to keep doing it.

"There are quite a few promising kids coming through that could join Hyde in the first team squad at some point.

"The reserves managed to end last season winning their last three or four games so things are looking quite good."

Scouting is one of several duties Selby performs in his role as a key member of John Barton's backroom staff - others include compiling reports on future opponents.

Finding players to boost the squad sees Selby on the road taking in matches, often with reserve team boss, Geoff Ashby.

Pace and quickness of feet are qualities he looks for in a player.

"The most important thing is talent, the natural talent to switch play, open the game up and beat a few people," he said.

"But it takes a long time to pick up a player, often we'll see someone up to ten times before we move for them."

Bringing in players from other clubs has changed from the times when as manager of Malvern Town, Selby recommended Peter Gocan to George Rooney, who later sold him for £5,000.

"The nature of the game has changed. Anybody who is anybody now is on a contract.

"Years ago players would be fixed up with jobs but now if you have a talent for football it is like your job and that is how they earn their money."
