A NEW advisory group aimed at making public events in Worcestershire and Herefordshire safer is being piloted by West Mercia police.
The new approach, which will make it easier for organisers to consult with experts, is being tested in neighbouring Shropshire where a safety advisory group has been formed, led by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council.
The group includes local authority officers, police, fire and ambulance personnel as well as representatives from the county emergency planning team and the highways agency.
Organisers will be able to discuss every aspect of planning and management of their event with their local Safety Advisory Group or SAG so that they can take action to ensure that all the necessary regulations have been followed.
"We're looking at ways to improve how we assess exactly what is required from event organisers, the police and other agencies," said Sgt Neil Spicer, who is co-ordinating the project.
"It's intended that SAG will act as the first point of reference for all those who are organising such an event."
Organisers will receive advice and guidance on a range of specific areas of responsibility and advice on best practice.
The initiative follows a recommendation from the Association of Chief of Police Officers that Safety Advisory Groups should be developed within local authorities.
